It's a bit testicular (m)
in reply to a message by Ailis
For that reason, I'd avoid it. I don't like the sound either but the flowers sure are lovely."The name "orchid" derives from orchis, the Greek for “testicle”. The Latin form orchis was taken by botanists of the 16th and 17th centuries as the basis for the plant’s scientific name. Their tubers (roots) resemble human testicles."

I don't worry about that kind of thing. Orchid only means a type of flower in English. Only a small number of people will even know of the connection.

You are ballsier than meBig pun intended. You are correct though, most don't know the flower's name relates to the testicles so it would most likely not be an issue.

Didn't you watch My Big Fat Greek Wedding? Nick and Angelo got Ian to say a phrase with a word that sounds like orchid. Everyone stared at Ian. When he got the real translation (I have three testicles) he chased the other two.

I don't remember that part! It's been a while since I saw it. Google is just my friend. I look up whatever I can to make sure I haven't missed anything. Someone mentioned an orchidectomy (surgery to remove one or both testicles) once in an Orchid thread and it went from there, really ;-)

The 'small family get together' to meet Ian's parents, after being introduced to Nick, Nick, Nick, Nick, Nicki, and Nick. In real life, I doubt any family would do that to cousins, but since the Millers were bombarded with so many new faces and names, it would seem like that.

Oh the things you pick up ;)I had no idea until a few years ago and I thought it was perfectly okay then. I don't think it renders it completely and utterly unusable but I'd not want people making the connection. Well, I'd just cringe with embarrassment, lol.

Neither did I...That has kinda put me off this name. I still like the sound and the flower, but the meaning...
