Thomas is my brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather's name. It's not a favourite of mine, but it has personal meaning to me so I'd definitely use it as a mn.

I'm kind of sick of it now and stopped liking it, but it was one of my favorite names when I was little.

I like Thomas, nn Tom and agree that it sounds strong and masculine. John Thomas is the best combo out of the ones you listed, because I don't like James and Thomas together, since they end in the same sound.

I love it. All of the names in your post are family names for me, so I am biased.

*So* much; it's currently my favorite boys' name. While it's common, I don't think it's boring; I think it has so much history and charm that prevents it from being so. (Of course, it helps for me that it was my grandfather's name.)

I mostly prefer Thomas on its own, but I like the NN Tom; it's so dashing (and, dare I say it, downright sexy), yet down-to-earth.

However, while Thomas James isn't bad, it *is* a little dull; I think Thomas needs a refreshing MN in order to give it that extra 'oomph,' if you will. (My personal favorite's Thomas Jerome, FWIW.)

I love Thomas! Unfortunatly, I don't love Tom or Tommy, which would be pretty inevitable so when (if) push comes to shove, it might get crossed off the list.

Opinions on your combos:
Thomas James - It's nice, but James is getting a bit fillery as a MN. Still, it's not on the level of Rose/Grace/Marie for girls, and the combo's quite nice.
James Thomas - Not bad.
John Thomas - Makes me smile because I'm a big 1776 fangirl. They're both lovely names and since I like John better than James this would probably be my vote, but for some reason when I say it it comes out a bit awkward. John seems to get cut short for some reason.

It is strong and classic without being overly common (like Joshua, Matthew, Michael, Benjamin etc). I love the history of the name and I really like the nn Tom

I love Thomas, but I'd pair it with a more unusual middle name. A John Thomas is a euphamism for a penis, so I'd stay away from that one.

I like Thomas--it's too classic to be boring,imo--but I dislike all of its nns. James Thomas and Thomas James both remind me too strongly of Thomas the Tank Engine and the Isle of Sodor. I would personally combine Thomas with a less common name.

I actually know someone named Thomas James. though his name is actually Thomas James-Ashby. I think Thomas could be nice for a middle name, maybe. or if it was honoring, and with a nice middle name you don't see every day. and I just so happen to think the name Tommy is awful, Thom is a fine nn in my opinion though.

The biggest sin to me is to be one of the crowd, and Thomas is that. Tom reminds me of a country redneck racist for some reason.

I love Thomas. It definitely falls into the handsome / classic catagorie. Thomas James is very nice, I prefer the NN TJ if the MN starts with a 'J', I just don't care much for Tom.

I used to have a cat named Thomas when I was 5 yrs. old, so this name has always been special to me.

I like it, simple and nice. I like Thom as a nickname more though. I don't understand why the h is dropped anyway.
