Ellis
I really like the name Ellis, but it's too surname-y for me as a given name. Can I use it as a nn for something else? Maybe something a little longer? Victoria (VictoriaCalledTori) gave me the idea of Elliot. Any other names you can think of? TIA!

There's also Ellery, but Elliot and Ellery are also both surnames. Just use Ellis. Anything else nn Ellis is just going to sound contrived.Array

Just use Ellis. Anything else nn Ellis is just going to sound contrived.Yes, I agree. I don't personally like Ellis but, as a general rule, I'm not opposed to surnames as given names on boys. However, if the surnameyness of Ellis bothers you, maybe you could use it as a middle name.

I'd just go with Ellis, if that's what I liked. It sounds too forced to me when it's applied as a nickname. It's the -is ending that makes it too random; it's just not a sound that I think can be pulled out of the air and work well for a longer name that doesn't also end in it. Ellis as a nickname for any name I came up with just struck me as being mismatched.
