In the UK we generally do. Elle is a popular and modern way of spelling Ellie, though in french lessons we say it as in "L"
And I've only ever known Eli to be a nickname of Elliot, so I've known it said like Ellie, as in "el-lee"

I'm in England, and I've never heard that. I definitely prefer Elle as "L" : /

fair enough, it depends on the parents, and also where we live. I live in an area where Biblical names such as Elijah do not flourish, and the only Elle I ever met was said like Ellie. I also much prefer Elle as "L" but it's a habit now.
