Re: Shuantaia...WDYT?
in reply to a message by Trudy
I really don't like it. "Shuan" doesn't even make sense to be pronunced "Shawn." "Shaun" would, but "Shuan" doesn't.
I have a certain weakness for more legit -aia names, though. I love Aglaia, Alaia, Kaia, Laia, etc--I love how the letters look together. Shuantaia doesn't really do it for me, though.

The pronunciation...
makes sense with a certain accent. New York? Some kind of New York. Brooklyn, maybe. Because in that accent, Shawn (or Shaun) is pronounced basically like Shuan (sort of like SHOOUN).

Huh.
Well, as a Midwesterner, born and bred, I'm afraid that I don't see it. When I say Shuan, it sounds vaguely Chinese, or like "swan" with a SH sound.

Yup
That's it. In the accent I'm thinking (and I'm 99% sure it's Brooklyn), people say Shawn like "swan" with an SH attached, and the /a/ sound cut short so that the emphasis is on the /oo/ from the W.
