Re: Atlantic Hurricane 2024 Names
in reply to a message by Anneza
This is actually a point of consideration: studies have found that some people (you can guess which demographic) take feminine-named storms less seriously than masculine-named storms of an equivalent intensity. Misogyny about hurricane names directly leads to under-preparedness. 🤦🏽♀️

I don't know, I think Ernesto is a suave, handsome, Latin-lover sort of name.
Andrew was pretty devastating and that name is quiet and dignified and mild.
Agnes was bad too and that name just sounds like a grouchy old lady.
And Mitch sounds downright wimpy. (Wonder how people's responses to Anglo names is in Spanish or French-speaking areas?)

I have read about such studies, but I am not convinced. Hurricanes change in intensity over the course of their existence, and unfortunately many areas are across-the-board poor at planning for storms. New Orleans, for one; they had been neglecting their levee system for decades despite the city being pretty much at the bottom of a bowl. They still haven't done as much as they should to prepare for the next big storm.
Just too many variables for me to wholeheartedly believe that the sex of the name of a hurricane influences whether people in its path take it seriously.
