Re: Ashley
The first Ashley I knew was a boy with two brothers: Dorian and Mark. The first thoughts I had about Ashley, when I was very young, was a character in stories I used to tell myself in bed before I fell asleep. There were two sisters named Ashley and Rachel, nns Ashers and Rache, and they had Enid Blytonish adventures involving getting each other into and out of trouble.I taught English once to a Taiwanese immigrant who had been given the English name 'Susannah' by her teacher in Taipei, but she never felt at home with it; someone suggested Ashley and she was delighted, but hesitant because she knew what ash is, and it seemed unattractive. So I was able to tell her about ash trees and the meaning of -ley, and she cheered up and used it happily.
