I think the sound is very unattractive. In the US, it has rather strong associations with stereotypical black domestic servants, thanks to a popular radio and TV show of the old days about a maid named Beulah, but I suspect the show was building off a cliché that was already established.
In all fairness however, I should add that my stepfather's grandmother, born in 1900, was named Beulah and was white.Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, when you criticize him, you're a mile away and you have his shoes!

Do you really mean your stepfather was named Beulah? Or was that your stepmother?
