My great grandmothers were
Ethel and
Esther. I thank God
Ethel didn't die right before I was born, because I'd have been stuck with
Ethel as a first name if she had. As it is, I'm stuck with
Esther (I go by my middle name) which is plenty ugly enough, but even it pales in comparison to
Ethel.
Ethel has such a heavy, thumping sound to it. It's so drab and dumpy and colorless. It's a sad, threadbare brown cardigan of a name.
Edna, however, is even worse, and that's saying something.
