I really think it's a neat idea. There's a lot of cool Gaelic names that didn't end up with easily pronounceable Anglicized forms. The meanings behind them are really awesome, and I frankly don't understand why some of them weren't Anglicized without having to go through a surname first.
I like the original Gaelic names, they're really awesome, but, it's hard for me, not to mention many people, in Anglophone regions to pronounce them. The whole Anglicization thing is really about pronunciation to me, to make it easy to quickly know how to say them.
My favorite Anglicized Irish names that went through surnames are
Donovan,
Nolan,
Casey and
Ryan.
