Yeah, that fairy tale was written by famed Danish author, Hans Christian Andersen.
In Danish Kai is named Kay, pronounced as KY as you also said. Gerda the same as you said also. That said, both Kai and Gerda are very dated in Denmark, as in you'll rarely see people born after the 1950s named it. For my generation, I was born in 1977, it's what our parents and grandparents and earlier generations were named as given names. I don't care for them at all.
Well, I do like Kai in other origins and meanings, like in the Chinese and the Hawaiian ways. But that's also it.
