Some celebrity (Jessica Simpson?) named her daughter Maxwell and I've seen it in at least one BA for a girl. That doesn't necessarily make it a good choice... What's wrong with Maxine?

I don't like Maxine, I only think of the old lady comic.

I will admit I don't loathe the idea of Max alone on a girl. It sounds very flapper-tastic.
