Darius Johan "Darry" Santiago has black hair with a bit of a curl to it that he combs back and lets grow just a little long on his neck. He is a little over 5'10" but not quite 5'11". His eyes are deep brown and his skin is naturally a rich tan - sometimes people ask if he's Native American (or from the Middle East), but as far as he knows his ethnic background is almost entirely Mediterranean. He grew up in a reasonably middle class home as an only child. His mother Maria died when he was fifteen and his father Danel never remarried. Darry's always been interested in cars/engines, horses, and classical poetry. He is generally polite, reasonably athletic, and a naturally gifted cook. He likes to wear tight jeans, "cow boy" style boots, and long-sleeved button-up-the-front shirts. His wardrobe is almost entirely dark colours: black, dark grey, purple, indigo, dark reds. He works as a chef.
His girlfriend is named Jane Victoria Blackbourne. She works part-time as an accountant and dreams of a full-time career as a writer. They met at a church function Darius was attending with his dad. She is 1/4 Korean on her mother's side with the rest being a "British Isles" mix. She is petite and has dark brown hair and she wears pulled back in a neat bun, braid, or ponytail and warm brown eyes. She has three kids under the age of ten, two from her ex-husband (Simon and Abigail) and one who is her niece (Jada, her brother's daughter) that she's been raising raising since the girl was two. Jane loves reading and watching sci-fi/fantasy. When she has time, she enjoys playing rpg video and computer games.
His best friend is named Dan Martin and he's chubby with light brown hair and perpetual stubble. He likes to boast that he's 1/16 Native American, but he's never been sure what tribe. He also loves cars and runs a mechanic shop. He drinks a lot of beer which might just contribute to the chubbiness, but he doesn't really care. He has four kids with three different ex-wives.
Darius likes both kittens and puppies, but has nowhere to keep a pet in his tiny apartment. Also, his girlfriend and her daughter Abigail are both allergic to animal hair.
Though he truly loves and is committed to Jane, he is still a little in love with his ex, Elliot Singer. They met in college where Elliot was studying computer science. They broke up when they graduated, because Elliot was moving across the country and Darius had a job offer at a local prestigious restaurant. Elliot is now happily married to a man named Bruce Jones who works as a bouncer at a night club. Elliot runs a successful company. When Elliot is in town visiting his folks, he brings Bruce along and they have dinner with Darius, Jane, Jane's kids, and sometimes Dan (sometimes one or more of Dan's kids). Bruce often says he wants kids as well, but Elliot is not so sure yet.
Darius has been thinking of a future with Jane as well as the two have been together for three years. He would like to marry her someday, but he's hesitant to bring up the subject just yet. Dan jokes, telling him marriage sucks (trust him, he's tried it enough times to know). Jane doesn't seem too eager to try it again either after after how badly her first ended.
