One of my close friends is called Aleksey and goes by Alex. He is Russian. I think it sounds very Russian - I can't see it working on someone who doesn't have a Russian surname/heritage. (If you do, then fair enough)

Alek is nice but I'd probably use it as a nickname for Alexander.
