It is less common, prettie in my opinion and the meaning of "my light" seems more significant than just being a form of Mary. Plus, it is one of those great names that rarely gets shortened (like Heidi) and you won't have to worry about people choosing a nickname you hate.
That said, Miriam is a fantastic name and I adore the nickname Mim. I think it would make a great sibset, but I would start with Liora. (Mim seems like "younger sister" material anyway).
