I must say, the minute I saw the title of your post and had not yet clicked on it, I thought Somer was probably short for Somerled or Somerset, which are both male names to me.
After reading your post, I still can't shake off the impression that Somer should be for a boy. It just seems too masculine on a girl for me. As such, obviously I prefer the spelling Summer on a girl.
By the way, 'somer' is archaic Dutch for 'summer' - the modern Dutch spelling is 'zomer'. The archaic Dutch form is still preserved in the Afrikaans language, which is largely descended from archaic Dutch.
