I'm not sure about it's popularity, my friend is in the US but my cousin is in France where I think it's even less popular but I'm not sure. One never really thought much about it until now.

The height of its popularity in France was in the 50s, so I believe Dominique is perceived as dated and seen way more on grandparents and parents than babies. I did some research on Dominique for a story I was writing, and it appears that in 1959 there were over 1100 female Dominiques and over 1000 male Dominiques born in Paris alone. By 2000, when my character was born, there were about 50 male Dominiques and only 4 female Dominiques born in the whole country. It seems it's not a stylish choice these days in France. It's used more in the U.S. and Quebec.
I was looking at it and thought the same but on all the French boards old names are coming back (just like in the US)so maybe it's on the rise? Who knows.
