It's very interesting how many layers there are to this idea. Alex, for example, I would call a unisex nickname and a masculine name. To me, it's equally perfect on an Alexandra or Alexander, but as the only name on a birth certificate I would see it as masculine.
Clearly, this is an issue where people are strongly guided by personal preference, opinion, and experience and end up in different places. It's given me some food for thought tonight. :)
