I'm curious as to how you consider Mabel to be a trendy spelling of Maybelle? This site has Maybelle listed as a variant of Mabel, but I think of Maybelle as a combination of May and Belle and not related to Mabel at all. Mabel is its own name. I don't pronounce them the same either.

With the trend being, shove a "y" in a name to make it look different. That's what Maybelle, reminds me of. Well, that's my opinion!
