Re: It can mean beautiful too. nt

Yea, no it can't. It means handsome, thats it, thats it's meaning. Belle means beautiful, Jolie means pretty, and Beau means handsome. And thats how it works.Kristen~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Click the link...(m)Actually, just click the link to Beau and you'll see what is listed as the meaning, here at an etymology site (as opposed to a baby name book or website which may or may not be credible). There, argument solved. :b

The database is neither perfect nor absolute . . .Mike does his best, but there are errors both of knowledge and of omission in some of the entries. The fact that it's "in the database" is a good sign that it's true, but without a French dictionary (or a French speaker) we can't be sure.

Some dictionaries say beautiful, some say handsome, some say both. If you're referring to a man, or a masculine object, and you want to call it beautiful, you would say beau, not belle.I think the confusion may be coming from the fact that females are typically described as "beautiful" while men are "handsome," although both words can be used for either gender.

Wrong. Beau can mean beautiful as well as handsome. If you want to say the weather is beautiful in French you would say it is "beau" because the word "weather" in French is masquline. Please don't spread false information about meanings as fact.
