...he'll most likely say it sure beats being called "Shelton" (the name he was given at birth).
Sheltons get beat up in the schoolyard, but nobody messes with a Spike.
And, of course, a "spike" is a sharply pointed object which can be used as a weapon, thus conveying a "tough guy" image.
Alternately, in American slang, the expression "to spike" something means to make it ineffective; to frustrate. As in the expression: "to spike a rumor."

Actually my friend Jeff is the drummer...They signed w/columbia records about 1 year ago and have been touring for a few months and their CD came out in supposedly middle May...

I am sure they would welcome you for your kind word...yes...Jeff has been playing the drums since we were in elementary school and his has been working on his music since he was in high school. Hard work does pay off...
