I like
Hugh. It was my father's name so it has sentimental asociations. Also when I was growing up I had a great-uncle
Hugh and several cousins as well as my dad.(all called after my great-grandfather)
I also like Aodh, the Irish version.
Going by the Hughs I have known I would see someone with this name as being blonde or fair in colouring and wiry in build, good company, stubborn, witty, quick tempered, clever.
I think it's good because it would suit a toddler, child, teen, etc. It would age well.
I agree that a long middle name would balance it out and can't fault
Alexander especially because of it's connection to your maiden name.
