Heavy and clumsy as a name; lovely as a flower, especially the blue ones. I was at school with someone whose little sister was named Hortense, with the French pronunciation, which is neater and tidier. And then there's always the old song:
Oh! oh! oh! my sweet Hortense She ain't good lookin' but she's got good sense
Before I kiss Hortense I always buy a nickles worth of peppermints
Rain makes flowers pretty I hear I hope it pours on her for a year
