I think Ellie is nice. I find it a bit too nicknamey to stand alone, but nicknames and full names are very popular at the moment, so it would be fine to most people.
Ellie definitely sounds different from Allie in my accent,but I suppose it depends where you live. I prefer Ellie instead of Allie.
