I'm half-Portuguese (but not Brazilian, my dad was born in the Azores.) My aunt is named
Zenaide, and I've never met or heard of any others! She goes by Zee.
Interesting to see João
Luiz as a double name. My dad's birth name was João
Luis (fn/mn; he changed it to
John after living in the US several years.)
My fiance knows a
Silas (I forgot if he's Brazilian or Cape Verdean). He pronounces it SEE-las; I like that a lot and prefer it to the long I pronunciation.
Is Arlete pronounced any differently than
Arlette? I adore that name, but with one T I want to say ar-LEET. Heh.
The names that come from Greek or
Roman, like Eurípedes and Vinícius, are neat. I remember a
Pericles in school, I think he was Cape Verdean. I also worked with a Brazilian
Thales, who pronounced his name to rhyme with "sails" instead of the Greek way.
I love, love, love
Flavia. ♥
