I was introduced to this as a name through Trip Fontaine in The Virgin Suicides so it will always sound a bit eerie to me just because of the vibe of that whole story.
I can't imagine it as a real name at all. I just can't take it seriously. It sounds like a nickname. If I found out someone had Tripp as their name on their birth certificate, I would probably feel bad for them having been jaded a "real" name.
I'd say if you wanted to use it as a nickname, you may be able to get away with it, but never saddle a child with it as a full name. No way.
