Ian has been very popular in Scotland and England. For this reason, it has a certain panache, being seen as the quintessential British name. When I worked as a telemarketer, I swear, every single Ian that I contacted had a British accent. But this is sure to change as it becomes more popular in the U.S.
Hearing the name Ian always gives me a thrill, because I was once madly in love with a man with that name. But that's just because of the association, not the name itself. I don't particularly care for it.
But many disagree, because it's climbing the popularity charts here.
