[Facts] Sylbaris and Cyparis
Hello,
I would like your help in finding the meaning of the name Sylbaris and also Cyparis, supposedly the only survivor of the 1902 eruption of Mount Pele on Martinique.
I've tried, in my best French to contact people on Martinique to find out, but nobody seems to know.
Could anyone help me find the meaning of these (first)names or could you refer me to anyone that might have any knowledge of the origin of these names ?
Thanks

Hoi Thijs
As Lassia said, my first thought of Cyparis was Cyprys too...it sounds familiar to me..but i can't relate to what..sorry!
I've looked on the Dutch firstname-site (http://www.meertens.knaw.nl/voornamen/VNB/index.php) but couldn't find anything!
Maar leuk om eens een Nederlander te zien op deze site buiten Lucille en mij....

Thanks Larissa.
I wish I could find someone to explain these names to me.
It's like someone put a spell or so on these names.
Groeten,
Thijs

Cyparis: the first thing that comes to mind is Cyprys/Ziprus/Ciprianus/Ciprian... But the "a" troubles me...

Thanks Lass,
It seems as if these names don't have roots anywhere.
I suspect they come from Latin or French (since they come from Martinique)...........they sound like names of musketeers to me.
regards,
Thijs
