Sadly, yes. Most people don't know how to say it.

Sorry, nothing off the top of my head.
4. Is the accent mark over the i required?
No, not in America anyway. Accents are pretty much meaningless here.
5. Does it seem pretentious, especially if the accent mark is kept?
I think they do seem rather pretentious when most people don't know what they mean, and they aren't easily produced on American keyboards.
