It's often used as a name in its own right, and I wouldn't think a
Beth definitely had a longer formal name, though I'd think it was quite possibly from
Elizabeth or
Bethany.
Personally, I like it as a nickname for
Bethany /
Bethanie. (I don't like
Elizabeth, I find it very boring. Actually I prefer
Beth on its own to
Elizabeth.)
