of the Virgin Mary, that was very common at the time. Also, many, or most, men had Joseph somewhere in their name.

My dad (who grew up in a very Catholic part of Glasgow in the 60s) had neighbours with 5 kids. They all had the middle name Mary, including the boys :-)
