Personally I'm a bit surprised it got as popular as it did. I certainly never considered it a modern classic - rather an older name that got an interesting second wind as a 21st century trend name. Yes,
Ella doesn't fit the typical "trendy" vibe, as it does have more substantial history, but particularly in a moment of time where names like
Eleanor and
Isabella - two very Ella-ish names - have such popularity,
Ella by virtue is insubstantial, a fine nickname but not one to stand alone.
Personally I do wish
Ella's demise would have brought back a resurgence of
Ellen. I quite like the name
Ellen.
