I hadn't noticed this as a name at all before this post, but there is a British historian named Bettany Hughes who I have seen several times in documentaries on PBS, and her name is evidently pronounced the same way, though in that spelling it seems to be have a surname origin. I've also been intrigued by the historian's name and so think this would be a good choice for a modern girl. I think I prefer the Bettany spelling, but that's probably just because it's what I've been familiar with, and
Betony could grow on me.
