I adored the name
Anya (or
Anja /
Aine) for a while. I still like it but I also worried about the "on ya" reference. :-/ I know a little girl named
Anja (mn
Maria; is of
German descent) who mainly shaped my opinion of this name. She's adorable and so sweet, and I first started loving the name because of her (though I do prefer the
Anya, or even
Aine, spellings). I wouldn't worry too terribly much about the "on ya" thing; I have seen a few Anyas over the years, so it's not as unusual a name as it used to be. As for being a nn, I don't see it as being nickname-y at all. I don't care for
Anastasia, and
Anna and
Anya are so similar sounding that I wouldn't think of using one as a nn for the other. :b
