Rachel and Rachael are plenty common in my age group and my best friend since I was 11 is a Rachel (in Australia) and they all get 'Rach' or maybe sometimes 'Rachie' as nicknames- never ever Ray. Ray/Rae are very dated in Australia though so that might be part of it.
