Amelie is the name of a girl I know, who's from London. Her English A sound in Amelie is not quite the same as the A sounds we make around here. The closest I can get is to rhyme it with camel-ee (often comes out rhyming family). I'm told that most of the Americans at school pronounce it AH-muh-lee, approximately to rhyme homily. Amelie's mother says something in-between - but IMO closer to camel-ee than to 'omily. She doesn't always put any emphasis on the ee, either.
Anyway the name is nice, but it's a little frustrating to pronounce in English. And no matter how we say it, it isn't different enough from Emily to be worth the trouble IMHO.
I'd rather meet an Emily than an Amelie, and I'd rather meet an Emilia than an Amelia.
Amelie vs Amelia ... I dunno, I guess I'll vote for Amelie, as long as it's AM-elie and nobody's pronouncing it to rhyme with homily because that sounds ugly to me in English.
