I agree that it may seem unnecessary (what a difficult word to spell!), but there are many unnecessary letters in English names too (Why
Hannah and not
Hanna, why
Sophia and not
Sofia, why
Michael and not
Mikel, why
Philip and not
Filip, why
Christine and not
Kristin etc.)
But the Danish spelling
Annelise may be best for Americans (and other non-Germans), since
Anneliese might be misspelt as Anneleise. "leise" means "quiet", and looks really bad imo.
Of course
Annelise may be pronounce as "
Anne Elise" (with 3 syllables instead of 4) but this is also a pretty name.
"But it’s all right now.
I learned my lesson well.
You see you can’t please everyone
So you got to please yourself."
Rick Nelson, GardenParty
"It does not become me to make myself smaller than I am." (
Edith Södergran 1891-1923)
