[Surname] Re: surname: Juneau
in reply to a message by Jamie
Juneau is an alteration of Jouineau (via Juineau) which is derived from Jouin, from the Latin name Jovinus derived from Jovis ‘Jupiter’. His ancestor was either
Jean Jouineau/Juineau from La Rochelle in Charente-Maritime (Poitou-Charentes) or Pierre Jouineau/Juineau from Angoulins in Charente-Maritime, both of whom arrived in Québec around 1655-1660.

Just to add, Jupiter means something like "god-father" ...see:http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?allowed_in_frame=0&search=Jupiter&searchmode=none
