My two pickles: Nicknames are for expressing affection, whimsy, creativity, individuality. As strict as I am with formal names is as loose as I am with nns. So Pippa, nn Piper, or Emerald, nn Jem / Gem / Emery is pretty uncontroversial, to me. I'd be OK with Pippa, nn Boogety Boo, or Emerald, nn Wiper Blades. That's the whole point of formal names -- they give cover for all sorts of fun with nns.
