It is 1940. Both Ben and Becky passed away last year after battling long illnesses. The family was devastated at their passing, but is learning how to live again. Ben Jr. and Maria haven't had any more children that anyone knows about. Of course, they haven't been heard from for a few years, so nobody knows exactly how they're doing. Eliza has become the family recordkeeper. She and Eli's kids are growing up fast. Thomas wants to go to medical school so he can help people, but Eli doesn't think the family can afford it. Stephen married a widow two years ago. Her name is Betsy Branson, and her husband was killed in a mining accident seven years ago. She has a son and a daughter as well. Stephen's kids have gotten along well with them and think of them as live-in cousins. Sarah and Aaron are busy raising their brood of boys. Never a day goes by that is boring at their house. Jonny and Lydia are doing well too. Their kids are growing and thriving. Debbie and Caleb adopted two children from an orphanage in New York City last year. The kids are still adjusting, but Nancy loves having some siblings. Abby and George suffered a little bit towards the end of the Depression and moved in with Ben and Becky for awhile. They had a second daughter last year named Minnie. Scottie married a girl from Pennsylvania three years ago and he has been very happy with her. The two of them don't have children yet, but they are hoping.
