[Opinions] Re: I just learned it's a form of dance & flower as well as a place name x
What's Kraut mean is slang terms? I never heard of it.I never knew faggot was a bundle wood, I know a fag is a cigarette in Europe (is it England?). I really hate slang terms they are silly, and ruin nice terms. :/.I might keep Gypsy just for sims *grumbles* there goes another pretty name *sigh*. I wouldn't like being called a Portagee, so I'll nix the name sadly.

Kraut is a derogatory term for a German. Fag is used to mean both a cigarette and a homosexual in England.

My two cents as a Kraut ;)Hi there, I agree with you that derogatory language towards any group should not be supported but don't you think it also depends on the way you say it? For example: I'm German and I know we're often called Krauts but it doesn't bother me if you say it in a funny way instead of a mean one (btw, I despise any form of Kraut, the food, so for me this name is very ridiculous). I do not perceive it as derogatory as long as you don't say it with that derogatory voice that probably all of us know. I would even be more offended if you used the official term German with that voice than if you called me a Kraut without any hatred in your voice. LOL, does that make sense at all?
Now I can't speak for Roma people here but maybe it's the same for them. While I would not name my daughter Gypsy because there are other names I like better, I would not assume parents who use the name to be discrimating Roma people with it. After all it's the name of their child and you usually do not name your kid after someone you hate, do you? However if anyone is seriously considering to use Gypsy they might prepare for their kid being teased by others, who do indeed use the term to discriminate. There's a lot of hatred in this world.

You bring up some fantastic points. Thank you!I understand what you mean about Kraut. It's like the word queer. It can be derogatory or not, depending on the context. I'm not suggesting that people name their children Gypsy BECAUSE they discriminate against the Roma, but because they are oblivious to the discrimination from which the word arises. All they see is a pretty word with a mystical meaning, and don't consider the horrible connotations. I suppose my crusade is against ignorance more than bigotry.

I agree, parents should consider all aspects of their naming choice before actually naming a child and yes, ignorance has proven to be a strong poison.

I kind of see your point, but since it's discouraged to use the term even without a derogative intent (this is why Roma is preferred), it wouldn't be so great to use it as a name.
