The Sri Lankan case is probably from Buddhist mythology, though there it is a male name and a river name. It is not Sanskrit, but I guess it may be a corruption of anupama, from an- (cognate with greek a-, means not) + upa (cognate with Germanic ob-, meaning beside, under, etc.) + mA (cognate with and meaning measure) + suffix: that which is without comparison. I have not studied the OIA developments enough to know whether this is the case.
