I'm really not too worried about this parnel-as-a-word thing. If you look it up on m-w.com, it doesn't even show up--it's clearly pretty darned obscure.
Pernel doesn't do anything for me, though. The resemblance to Pearl is what bothers me; I had a very bad run-in with a Pearl once, and it's put me off the name entirely.
