[Facts] Re: Please help with unusual boy name

Alaric means "noble ruler" (Germanic). Replacing "A" with "Ae" would infuse the name with a Hellenic prefix signifying "eternity" ("aei") or "ether" ("aether"). In such case, the pronounciation would be Ella-ric (as in ella Fitzgerald), with the accent in the first syllable. Had a such person with such a name lived in the 5th century, he would be viewd with suspicion (and probably skewered) by both the feuding Wizzigoths and Helleno-Romans.

Hey Pre-nup,
Funny you should mention the Wizzys. Actually the name IS Wizzygoth (okay, Visigoth, so technically Germanic), and was originally "Alarikhs" in Goth. The "-rikhs" part, as in Theudurikhs (Theodoric) and my own Jettarikhs (confuses his "v"s and "w"s...), means "king" (Latin cognate=rex).
Big Al sacked a number of places in his day, including Buddy Love's own Piraeus, Corinth, and Sparta. Also some places in other countries, where the people didn't so readily capitulate and run away shrieking....
Don't know how you get around the "Al" part, mah frens. Kids and people (two distinct species) will pick the lowest common denominator when it comes to shortening names, so think worst-case and if you can live with that option, take yer chances. Good luck!

Oh the shame of it! (PriaposLovs, embarassed, wears a paper bag on his head)
