Where did you hear that Aisling was the Irish version of Shirley? That is completely inaccurate! Aisling is from an Irish word meaning "dream; vision." It is a type of poem in which Ireland is portrayed as a beautiful girl in distress. It became popular as a girls' name in the 1800s in Ireland. It has no connection to the name Shirley.
Shirley was originally an English surname comprised of words meaning "sunny; bright" + "clearing/meadow/field." It has no Scottish equivalent.
