Olena Bohuslava, 8, Ukrainian
Hanna Mariya, 8, Ukrainian (Twin to Olena)
Mykola Yuriy, 6, Ukrainian
Sunan Mongkut, 4, Thai
Kanya Pakpao, 19 mths, Thai
Olena Bohuslava - or Lena, as she prefers to be called, is a bright, spirited child. She is quite stubborn on having things the way she likes them, which is often at the expense of her brother, Mikey. Although there is a language barrier, Lena has adjusted surprisingly well. She seems to enjoy life in a large family that, at times, is very stressful. In fact, the more stressful it is for me, the more she seems to enjoy it! She is very energetic and seems to enjoy soccer and hockey above all things (she is just finishing the soccer season and will soon start hockey), although horses come very close on the list. She is very fond of all her siblings, most of all when she gets her way. Lena has black hair, dark brown eyes, and very fair skin.
Hanna Mariya - Lena's identical twin. Hanna is very bright and spirited, just like her twin sister, but is more apt to comprimise. She is also a little daredevil and loves to slide down the banister (much to my dismay). She is a big fan of ballet and soccer, and is currently enrolled in both. She had more adjustment issues than her sister did - for the first few weeks, she would pretend to be a different person every day - complete with outfits out of the dress-up box. It took us a while, but now we get to enjoy Hanna instead of her numerous alter egos. I have a feeling that she would very much benefit from a drama club, although I want to wait a bit for comfort's sake. She and Lena both like to play tricks on Clarice, a very pleasent ESL instructer who comes over twice a week to help the children with their English.
Mykola Yuriy - or Mikey, as we call him is a very shy, quiet child. He is a little prone to hiding in corners. I think that his siblings overwhelm him sometimes - especially the twins! It's hard to decipher what his likes and dislikes are as he tends to go along with everyone else. I hardly think he likes make believe as much as Hanna, but he goes along with her charades. I think that being able to act out a character has helped Mikey open up to us in ways that have otherwise taken a lot longer, although I look forward to the day that he is comfortable enough to be himself. For now, I'm happy to report that he has a definite taste for all things ice-cream and seems to have made it his personal quest to try every flavour at our neighbourhood ice-cream parlor. He doesn't talk much, except to his sister Kanya, but loves to be read to. Mikey has blond hair, blue eyes, and a very faint sprinkle of freckles across his nose.
Sunan Mongkut - or Sunny, as the twins insist on calling him, is a very happy, but very volitile child. The temper on this one! Unfortunately, his temper makes him a favourite target of Lena's tricks. Still, he loves to chase after his older sisters, who are very good at letting him play soccer with them even though he doesn't understand the game yet. Sunny always wants to do what the big kids are doing, even if it's watching the fish in the fish tank with Mikey. He is a bit posessive with toys and often hoards them away behind curtains or under a table. Kanya, unfortunately, is very often the victem as the older children don't let him get away with it. Still, we enjoy the challenge very much and there is always a smile waiting to be found. Sunny has black hair and eyes and manila coloured skin.
Kanya Pakpao - Kanya is a very sweet, easy going child. She loves to watch her older siblings act out plays, although tries to interact much more than Hanna would like. Mikey loves to sing to her when he thinks no one is looking. I think that she enjoys being his confidant, and often takes him by the hand and brings him wherever she wants to go. Kanya is a big fan of anything musical, which includes her television shows. She loves to listen to the songs on Dora the Explorer and Blue's Clues, but often wanders away when they end. Kanya has very fine black hair that hasn't started to grow in yet, and dark brown eyes that already need glasses!
