At 60, Larry has retreated into an heremitic life. He spends most of his days at Rosewood, carefully archiving family memorabilia. He only leaves the house to visit Rose's grave, and has passed the mantle of managing charitable trusts to Anne. She has become his confidante, as his surviving sons, busy with their own lives, visit less and less frequently.
Anne has never remarried. She is fond of her solitary life. Larry has become a surrogate father to her. Most days, they are the only company the other can stand.
Over time, cracks began to form on Julian and Evie's affection. Julian remains queer, withdrewn, paranoid. Evie has tried her best to help him, and to calm him, but he never let her in. Eventually, as her efforts remained fruitless, Evie broke off the engagement.
A year later, Julian met Winnie Middleton, an art historian who seemed, at first sight, to take nothing seriously, cutting through his sense of doom, challenging his fear with levity. They married in a small, intimate ceremony. Larry and Alec attended with reservations - Evie was family to them, and up till the wedding, they hoped Julian would come back to his senses and beg his ex fiancée to come back to him. Still, they cautiously welcomed Winnie into their lives.
Lillian's journalistic career often took her away, leaving Alec feeling uncertain of their future together. Were the foundations it was built on as strong as the bridges he built? After his near-fatal accident, Alec developed a taste for stability that Lillian could not and did not wish to provide.
