The year is 2020. Nelson and Tomoko have successfully moved (back) to the US, settling in San Francisco. They had a daughter back in 2019, before the COVID pandemic got into motion. Nelson used his skills and knowledge from his time in the military to found his own company, a security company called Rodney Inc. Tomoko became an audio engineer at the Alternative Tentacles record label. The pandemic hit Nelson harder, as much of his income came from arranging security for schools and workplaces, but he managed to offset the losses by working with hospitals as a security contractor. Blossom's first year of school has been homeschooled, until Covid passes over.
