The child was only one when polio took him. Louis Eugene Buckley, a life quenched before it could begin. His father was barely able to attend the funeral for his young, and only son at that time. Marion fell into a deep depression, so bad that, even in the midst of the Great Depression, she sought a psychiatrist. She found Dr. Hastings, or "Charlie." He liked to say it was his practice for his patients to call him by his first name, to make them feel a little more at ease. Marion knew this was not the case. She knew he had taken a liking to her.
But... well, with poor little Louis... and Julian always away, or in his books... well, something had to be done. And so their affair began in great secret, kept away from the family.
Later that year, a boy, about fourteen years old, and a hobo by the looks of it, came to Nathaniel's doorstep asking for work, ready to beg and plead on his knees if he had to. Instead, Jessie Roy Wells found a home with the Buckleys. Though he's never really called Nathaniel "Dad" or Edna "Mom," anyone who saw them out in public would assume just that.
Since Phoebe has basically cut her father out of her life, she's yet to meet young Jessie, but Julian speaks highly of the lad. Jessie finds Julian's old books and chess sets and Stephen's medical texts to be highly interesting, which melts Nathaniel's heart (in a good way).
Unfortunately, the Buckleys cannot escape tragedy for long. Rebecca is widowed when Leonard dies in an automobile accident, no children to remember him by. She moves across the country, to New Mexico, to become a mathematics teacher there, as she is fluent in Spanish. She corresponds with Phoebe as often as she can.
Following this terrible event, Marion and Julian are blessed with a son, Lester (or Les). The boy is the spitting image of his father; there is practically no doubt in Marisol's mind that the child is his. She hopes, for Julian's sake, that her intuition is correct. Little Lori adores her baby brother with all of her tiny heart.
