-- S [16] Randolph Jasper CastletownCalliope and Helwise were both schooled in the exact same way. They learnt Albionese and Franconian, the two nations' fraught history. They read translations of religious and philosophical texts, and learnt the feminine arts of embroidery and playing the piano. Occasionally, when guests were invited, one of them would be asked to sing. Their well-meaning request would prove disastrous: poor Helwise was completely tone-deaf, and Calliope much too shy to sing in front of an audience. She would only sing when she was alone in the château's garden. It was large and unkempt, with nooks and crannies where she could sing undisturbed. One day, when she was 16, she was singing. She thought she was alone, but unbeknownst to her, the gardener's son– a boy of no more than 8, who was learning the trade from his father – was listening, slack-jawed. When she noticed him, he told her she sang like an angel. Flattered by the little boy's earnest praise, the next time she was asked to sing while Randolph played the pianola, she agreed, and astounded everyone with her sweet, crystalline voice. She received a standing ovation. This emboldened her. Calliope knew she was expected to marry well. Her parents' marriage was meant to tie Albion and Franconia together, and hers would similarly be expected to build or strengthen diplomatic bonds. But she dreamt of more, and the dream seemed just within her grasp. One day, when a maid went to wake her and Helwise up, she found a note Calliope had written. It said she had left for Frankfort, the Franconian capital, to seek her luck an opera singer. This caused an uproar. Not only was Calliope the scion of a well-respected family, who fled to practice a trade associated with women of ill-repute, but by doing so, she left behind the man she was all but engaged to – Henry Right, an aspiring diplomat who haled from Albion. In order to mitigate scandal, he was quickly wed to Calliope's twin sister, Helwise, instead. At 45, Phoebe, Cassian's wife, became pregnant again. Unfortunately, her advanced age was caused her to go into labour early, six months into her pregnancy. Both her and the baby were lost. 🕊️❣️🌻💌🌻❣️🕊️masculine list: https://www.behindthename.com/pnl/191050/124079
